Community Update

-Comics!

So I've been reading the f out of some comics lately. I just finished the last TPB of Y: The Last Man which was phenomenal. Highly recommended. I also went through the first volume of Fables which was a bit underwhelming - I wonder if that picks up? I also also tackled the first two volumes of Powers which got better as it went along. I'm now reading through Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth which is every bit as sad and surreal as I hoped it would be.

Thats probably enough for now, right?

I can't be the only person

who sees the similarities between the headlines on cnn.com and theonion.com, can I? CNN's online reporters are really taking a dive. Do yourself a favor and take a second to peruse the headlines over there - I guarantee a few chuckles. Tonight's favorite: "Woman Chases After Cooks With Broom"

Has Twitter Killed The Blog?

It has for me. Specifically, my propensity for sidetracking tends to make blog posting difficult for me. In fact, before long I'm sure we'll be so far away from the subject of this post that we'll both have forgotten what we were even talking about.

Which is weird, because thats kind of the point I'm trying to make.

I suppose some people get all bloggy about particular topics and can just go to town on those topics. But then you start reading a few blogs and you see that most people generally say the same things over and over again. A prime example would be everybody's blogging about The Dark Knight, which pretty much cover the same general area across the board - people do or don't compare it to The Godfather II, the do or don't say Heath Ledger deserves a posthumous Oscar, they do or don't like how Christian Bale gets all GOB Bluthy with his voice-in-suit, etc. This will go on for a few weeks and then we'll all be talking about how sick The Mummy 3 is or whatever.

Sometimes I feel like I want to be a part of that community, but then I end up getting sidetracked (surprise) and land somewhere else entirely. Its a problem I'm starting to realize I have. Take that short film I'm working on. Or that children's book. Or that album. Or that Ironic Poetry Blog. Or that country song. One of these days they'll all get done, as long as I don't think of something else I want to do before one of them gets finished.

Sorry for rambling. Twitter kind of solves this problem for me blogging-wise because I can just type whatever blurby thought comes to mind and be done with it without having to elaborate. Thanks Twitter!

On to links to things I've been enjoying lately:

-Invincible started off fairly slowly and lost me at the end of the first trade - I didn't care for some of the turns the story took and decided I didn't have time to keep up with it. A friend from work suggested I give the book another shot and kindly lent me the remaining 8 TPBs (woah). I pretty much haven't stopped reading this since the weekend. Really excellent book! And Science Dog!

-Sorry to everyone I've bored to death talking about Wall-E, but boy howdy was that great.

The rest of my time has been pretty much consumed by Starbucks Vanilla Skim Lattes and running. What two things go better together?

Woah

I've had the hiccups for like 20 minutes. But for real. How's that for a simile that really means what its saying.

I suppose blogging isn't really one of my interests. I haven't updated since November after all.

PS, I can totally hear the upstairs neighbors urinating. Reality sinks in, eh?

I really didn't mean

for this blog to turn into a place to ramble about music all the time, but somehow that's where we always end up. I'll try to avoid it momentarily.

I saw Control a few weeks ago. If you aren't familiar, its a black and white film about Ian Curtis and Joy Division. It was really f'ing good.

I also caught The Orphanage at the AFI in Silver Spring this past weekend. Its a Guillermo del Toro produced film from Spain. The screenwriter and director were in attendance at the screening and held a QandA session after the film. I really enjoyed that.

Currently listening to/waiting to listen to:

Jesu - Lifeline
Lisa Papineau - Night Moves
Joy Division - Still
Maritime - Heresy and the Hotel Choir
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People
Mojave 3 - Excuses for Travellers

PS, my eMusic downloads just restarted for the month so please inundate me with suggestions on what I should be listening to.

Seeking Suggestions

On a good pair of slippers. Any suggestions?

Did you know that October 15th was Blog Action Day? Neither did I. Well done blogging community.

In lieu of posting a ton of paragraphs about stuff like I normally do on the rare occasion that I blog I've decided to give the rundown bullet-style (thanks Wachowski Bros!)

  • Hey guys, I totally miss you - thanks for the sweet hangouts we had lately: jgarber, jcarbaugh, and "insert blog here" Grover.
  • Got to see Stars on Saturday night with some fine folks. I want to move to Montreal immediately.
  • I bought a Melodica this weekend. I'll let you known how that goes once it gets here.
  • I want to write an album this Autumn/Winter - anybody in?
  • There's a four in five chance I'll be making a grilled cheese sandwich before Heroes comes on tonight.
I think that about covers it. Please feel free to add anything I might have missed.

Win a Trip to Hang Out with Steve-O!

Now who wouldn't want that.

I don't really have much to post about at this moment, but I felt compelled to do so and as a result here we are.

Its getting to be Autumn, which for me is typically exhibited through my music-listening habits as a correlation between decreasing temperatures and increasing wistfulness. Despite the rock steady 80-degree temperatures, the mind and soul have carried on as they wish. Its getting downright sad up in here.

I've really increased my music buying lately. I can't tell if this happens in cycles or if I'm just really getting into things more lately. I could easily fill two or three blogs with ramblings on why I prefer purchasing physical CDs over straight downloads, but I will say that I'm extremely excited about how much broader my musical tastes have gotten over the past few years. The Internet(TM?) has provided such an amazing means of finding obscure, independent artists - and more importantly - a means to interact with and support them. Online stores like Tone Vendor are catered to such specific tastes and provide such a wonderful variety for those who share them. Its great having such resources around.

Here are some links to some bands I've been listening to:

Club 8
The Most Serene Republic
Jose Gonzalez
Ken Andrews
Seam
